About Us
Our Mission
Locally Crafted Workshop is:
An inspiring space, where children and adults can experiment with new crafts or enjoy favorite activities.
A classroom, where guests can learn new skills and push the boundaries of their creativity.
A place for celebration and community, where birthday memories are made during one-of-a-kind parties; weddings and babies are celebrated at showers; and community groups come together.
Our Story
In fall 2021, Stacey Hammer and Heather Luxenberg opened Locally Crafted to showcase handmade goods from local makers. Their mission was to create a bridge between the many creative small businesses in the D.C. area and customers looking for unique, high-quality products.
Locally Crafted flourished, and began hosting indoor and outdoor markets throughout the year, connecting even more makers and shoppers. In 2024, after more than two years in temporary storefronts, Locally Crafted found its permanent home in a cozy space in the Rio center. The new store is the perfect place to showcase items made by Locally Crafted’s vibrant community of makers. But it’s too small to host the classes and parties that customers were clamoring for. So, in fall 2024, Stacey and Heather partnered with Becky Sher, a maker in the original store, to introduce Locally Crafted Workshop, a craft classroom, party venue and community event space just down the shopping center’s main street.
Opening in January 2025, Locally Crafted Workshop makes creativity easy. There’s no need to spend time running from store to store collecting supplies, or downloading instructions for a hobby that looks interesting. No worries about cleaning up paint spills or picking up hundreds of beads that were accidentally knocked from the table. Parties are an enjoyable celebration, not another long to-do list. Here, it’s easy for kids, teens and adults to do something they may never have tried on their own. Best of all, LCW gathers the large community of makers that Stacey and Heather built in the original store to create a roster of inspiring instructors for classes and workshops.
But Stacey, Heather and Becky also knew that LCW could be even more than a craft classroom. Its large, flexible floor plan makes it the perfect spot for meetings, lectures, mixers and more. LCW aims to become a community gathering space where groups can find an affordable, convenient venue for any activity they’re planning.
Our Team
Stacey Hammer
Stacey has always loved crafting and explored many different art forms throughout the years. During the pandemic, while practicing law from home, she started playing with polymer clay after watching a YouTube video. Before she knew it, she had created several hundred pairs of clay earrings. So when the opportunity arose to sell her work from a pop-up artisan space, she jumped at it. It was then Stacey became acquainted with the vibrant and extensive Maryland makers community, and ultimately decided she would make a huge mid-life career shift and open a new store featuring local makers.
Favorite crafts: Resin art, polymer clay, fused glass
Becky started crafting as a child, and now she’s rarely without a knitting project tucked in her bag or a granny square on her coffee table. After many years as a journalist and college professor, Becky opened Ruth & Dottie in 2011 to sell her handmade goods, including flair buttons and stamped pencils. Her items have been sold in stores all over the U.S. and Europe, including Locally Crafted. For years, she hosted craft camps, classes and parties in her dining room, and she’s looking forward to finally having a workshop space where she doesn’t also serve Thanksgiving dinner.
Favorite crafts: Knitting, crochet, felt crafts, bargello
Heather Luxenberg
Heather caught the crafting bug when she started scrapbooking and hasn’t stopped! Since then she has tried fused glass, painting, and settled on decorative cake making as her first small business in the crafting world. Prior to crafting, Heather spent many years in education — first as an elementary school teacher and administrator. Her classroom was always the one where her students were encouraged to get messy with arts and crafts. She and her family have spent many hours perusing craft festivals and attending crafting workshops. When Stacey approached her in 2021 about opening their own store, she couldn’t miss the opportunity to shift gears and become a small business owner once again.
Favorite crafts: Cake decorating, resin art, papercrafts
